Provost Steven R. Angle

Steven Roger Angle

Steven Roger Angle, Ph.D., a nationally recognized researcher, honored educator and experienced administrator, is Wright State University's new provost. He replaces David R. Hopkins, who became Wright State's sixth president, succeeding Kim Goldenberg, on February 1, 2007.

"Dr. Angle has a proven track record of successful collaboration within and outside the university," said President Hopkins. "He has had great success as an administrator of a complex and multifaceted organization. He has demonstrated a personal commitment to diversity and a dedication to building quality and excellence in higher education. We are delighted to welcome Dr. Angle as part of the Wright State community."

"I am excited to be working at Wright State, an institution that has grown in its well-earned reputation for the learning experience it provides its students, for innovative and collaborative research that impacts the regional economy, and for its engagement with the community it serves," said Angle.

As Wright State's provost and chief academic officer, Angle oversees the university's schools and colleges and nationally funded research centers and institutes. In addition, he oversees the operations of the divisions of Business and Finance, Advancement, Student Affairs and Enrollment Services, Curriculum and Instruction, and Research.

Formerly the dean of the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences (CNAS), Angle was also director of the Agricultural and Natural Resources Program at the University of California, Riverside (UCR), where he held the rank of professor in the Department of Chemistry. Angle joined the University of California, Riverside, faculty in 1986. In his role as dean, Angle worked with campus administration to secure state and private funding for seven major capital projects, began a major genomics institute, and saw freshman enrollment rise more than 20 percent. Under his leadership, the college instituted new programs to bolster success among freshmen, developed a collaborative program to encourage students to become high school teachers in science and math and built the infrastructure of the college for the future.

Prior to becoming dean, he served as the college's associate dean for physical and mathematical sciences from 1997 until his appointment as interim dean in July 2000. As dean of CNAS, which serves more than 4,600 students, Angle oversaw more than 265 faculty in 13 academic departments including physical, mathematical, biological and agricultural sciences, several organized research units and eight of the university's natural reserves. He had responsibility for the college's day-to-day operations, strategic planning and a general fund budget of nearly $54 million annually.

Angle was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1999 and an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow in 1993, an award that allowed him to advance his research on cancer-treating chemotherapy agents and the design of new anti-cancer compounds. He received UCR's Distinguished Teaching Award in 1991. He received his bachelor's degree in chemistry at UC Irvine in 1978, his master's degree in chemistry at UCLA in 1981 and his Ph.D. in chemistry at UC Irvine in 1984.
