Wright State art exhibit focuses on Darwin’s theory of evolution

How five different artists react to Charles Darwin and his theory of evolution is the theme for a Nov. 1−Jan. 10 exhibition at Wright State University’s Robert & Elaine Stein Galleries in the Creative Arts Center. “Reflections on Darwin” includes the artists’ exploration into the ideas behind evolution and its impact on today’s society. The event celebrates the 150th anniversary of Darwin’s book On the Origin of Species and the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth. Featured artists are photographers Alison Carey, Jo Whaley and Catherine Chalmers. Also included will be oil paintings by John Bavaro and a site-specific installation by Tracy Hicks. An opening reception on Thursday, Nov. 5, in the galleries will follow a Wright State Presidential Lecture by JD Talasek, director of cultural programs of the National Academy of Sciences, at 7 p.m. in the Schuster Concert Hall at the Wright State Creative Arts Center. Both the reception and lecture are free to the public. Talasek has curated several exhibitions at the National Academy of Sciences, has taught photography at the University of Delaware and was the creator and organizer of a recent international online symposium on Visual Culture and Bioscience. Carey is an assistant professor at Columbia College in Chicago, and Whaley, who has exhibited her photography throughout the world, is from the San Francisco Bay Area. Bavaro is an artist and educator at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, where he directs the Bruce Gallery. Hicks is from Dallas, Texas, where his works investigate objects we preserve in our homes, museums and public places. Chalmers is a video artist, photographer and writer who resides in New York. Gallery hours are 10 a.m.−4 p.m., Wednesday and Friday; 10 a.m.−7 p.m. on Thursday noon−4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The exhibition and related programs is supported by the Ohio Arts Council and Wright State’s STEAM3 (Sciences, Technology, Engineering, Art, Music, Math & Medicine) Initiative, Office of the President, Friends of the Galleries and College of Liberal Arts.
