NSF-funded alliance to help Dayton regional students with disabilities enter STEM fields -- Wright State University, in partnership with Ohio State University, is leading a five-year program to recruit Ohio students with disabilities to enter the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields in the Dayton and Columbus regions. Wright State leads the nation in helping individuals with disabilities overcome barriers to finish college degrees.
The program, Ohio’s STEM Ability Alliance (OSAA), was awarded a $3 million National Science Foundation grant, with the goals of recruiting, retaining and graduating students with disabilities in STEM degree programs at Wright State and Sinclair Community College in Dayton, and Ohio State and Columbus State Community College in Columbus. Opened in 1973 as what was then a state-of-the-art facility, the Creative Arts Center is now cramped for space as enrollment in the arts continues to grow.
“Through his generous gift, Dr. Schuster is helping to fund the education of young artists in both the visual and performing arts,” said David R. Hopkins, president of Wright State University. “His gift will enhance our quality learning environment where students of music, theatre, dance, film and art showcase their talents to the community.”(02/18/2009) Wright State names new associate vice president for development -- Wright State University has announced the appointment of Rebecca (Becky) S. Cole as associate vice president for development. Cole was chosen unanimously by a selection committee on January 22 and will begin her new duties at Wright State on March 2.(02/17/2009) Internationally known speaker brings Charles Darwin to life at Wright State -- To celebrate the bicentennial of Charles Darwin's birth, science teacher Robert Dennison will portray the famous evolutionist in a free public lecture Friday, Feb. 27, at Wright State University. The weekend festivities also included a Monte Carlo night, a tailgate party and a basketball game.(02/12/2009) Activist and educator Angela Davis to give free lecture at WSU -- Feminist scholar, writer and social activist Angela Davis will give a free, public lecture at Wright State University on Monday, Feb. 23, at 7:30 p.m. as part of the 2008-09 Presidential Lecture Series. The series was developed to advance human justice and promote the university's commitment to creating a diverse university community and learning environment. The program will be officially launched once reviewed and if approved by the Ohio Board of Regents.(02/06/2009) Polar explorer Ann Bancroft to give lecture at Wright State -- One of the world's preeminent polar explorers comes to Wright State University on Friday, Feb. 20, to share her experiences leading several expeditions to places such as Antarctica, Greenland and the Northwest Territories in Canada.
Ann Bancroft, the first woman in history to cross the ice to both the North and South Poles, will give a free, public lecture at 8 p.m. in the Student Union Apollo Room on the Dayton campus as part of the university's 2008-09 Presidential Lecture Series and the 2009 Adventure Summit.
