Wright State engineering students take five trophies at national human powered vehicle competition -- Wright State University engineering students designed five award-winning vehicles that can be used for exercise, recreation and transportation at this year’s American Society of Mechanical Engineering’s Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) East Coast competition. (05/31/2005) Wright State commencement ceremony June 11 -- Wright State University will hold its 38th semiannual commencement ceremony on Saturday, June 11, at 10 a.m. in the Ervin J. Nutter Center on campus. The event will include presentation of an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree to Rajesh (Raj) K. Soin, chairman of the board of MTC Technologies Inc. (MTC). Soin will receive the honor for his vision and entrepreneurial spirit, integral role in the development of Wright State University, support of higher education and philanthropy.(05/31/2005) Violence Prevention Training Institute scheduled at Wright State University -- A Violence Prevention Training Institute is scheduled this Friday and Saturday, June 3-4, by the Center for Child and Adolescent Violence Prevention at the Wright State University School of Professional Psychology (SOPP).(05/31/2005) Tom Hanks supports WSU theatre fund -- Actor Tom Hanks and his wife, Rita, recently donated $5,000 to the Department of Theatre, Dance and Motion Pictures to begin the Tom Hanks Scholarship and Visiting Artist Fund.(05/30/2005) Together, Wright State and Greene Inc. make being green easier -- Six employees from Greene Inc. have worked eight hours a day, five days a week for the past 10 years keeping Wright State green. The event will be held on the Wright State University quad from 6 to 7:30 p.m. (05/24/2005) Wright State to host workshop on Internet sales and marketing -- The Ohio Small Business Development Center at Wright State University will sponsor “How To Get Traffic To Your Web Site and What To Do When It Gets There: The Basics of Internet Marketing,” a workshop to be held on Thursday, June 9, from 8:30 a.m. to noon in the Atlantis Room, E157 Student Union on the Wright State campus. Topics to be covered include: how to get quality traffic to your Web site, how to design a Web site to convert your traffic to sales and leads, simple ways to measure the performance of your Web site, how to beat your competition online and winning strategies for Internet success.(05/24/2005) Wright State students inducted into international nursing honorary -- Wright State nursing students recently inducted 64 members into Zeta Phi, the Wright State chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, the International Honor Society of Nursing. The ceremony was held in the Nutter Center Berry Room. Approximately 200 students attended the event. The induction was part of the celebration of National Nurses Week. (05/23/2005) Horizons in Medicine wins Quest for Community Diversity Award -- The Wright State University School of Medicine's Horizons in Medicine Program received the second annual Quest for Community Diversity Award during the "Quest for Community: A Call to Action" conference. Charlotta Taylor, associate director for academic support and recruitment in the School of Medicine and director of the program, accepted the award from President Kim Goldenberg and Provost David Hopkins.(05/23/2005) Wright State students to present community survey findings -- Twenty-four Wright State University graduate students in the Masters of Public Administration program are gearing up to present their research on critical issues in the Dayton region. As part of their capstone course, the students divided into groups for six research projects focusing on education, local government and economic development. (05/20/2005) Wright State begins program to aid teens who suffer with severe mental illness -- A new support group to help teens with severe mental illness is being established by the Wright State University School of Professional Psychology (SOPP). Scheduled on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Ellis Human Development Institute, 9 N. Edwin C. Moses Blvd., the sessions will begin on May 31 and conclude on July 12.(05/20/2005) Wright State University Pre-College Programs offer summer enrichment for K–12 students -- It’s not too late to sign up for this summer’s educational enrichment programs for students in grades K–12 offered by the Wright State University Office of Pre-College Programs. The summer programs include Discovery 2005, Residential Camps, Residential Institutes and Ohio Summer Honors Institutes. (05/20/2005) Nursing Institute survey of nurses focuses on regional shortage and future needs -- Acute care nurses at 24 area hospitals being asked to give 15 minutes of their time today are helping predict how the nursing shortage will impact patient care in the Miami Valley for the next 15 years.(05/20/2005) Bor Jang named dean of Wright State University College of Engineering and Computer Science -- Bor Jang, Ph.D., has been named dean of the Wright State University College of Engineering and Computer Science, effective July 1. He replaces James Brandeberry, Ph.D., who is retiring after 35 years of service to the university.(05/19/2005) “Surviving” PE Class: No Students Voted Off This Island -- Adam Morton's goal was to make fitness fun. The exemplary teaching practices and innovation he displayed in the classroom not only inspired his students to reach their fitness goals, it also helped earn him Ohio’s 2005 Outstanding Student Teacher of the Year Award from the Ohio Association of Teacher Education (OATE). (05/18/2005) Wright State to hold “Milton Marathon” -- The Wright State University Department of English Language and Literatures invites the community to experience John Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost. On Friday, May 20, in the Millett Hall Atrium, the entire poem will be read, beginning at 8 a.m. and continuing until approximately 7 p.m. Everyone is invited to take a turn reading or just listening at anytime throughout the day. Refreshments and door prizes will be available.(05/16/2005) Reasons for domestic violence differ for men, women according to research psychologist at Wright State -- The reasons for domestic violence generally are different for men than for women, according to Kathleen Malloy, Ph.D., a Wright State University faculty member and expert on the topic.(05/12/2005) Wright State offers five-week English teaching certificate program this summer -- Wright State’s Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) programs will offer a five-week intensive Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certificate program this summer. (05/11/2005) Wright State to host co-author of best-selling book Shifting: The Double Lives of Black Women in America -- Kumea Shorter-Gooden, Ph.D., professor at the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University in Los Angeles and co-author, with Charisse Jones, of the best-selling book Shifting: The Double Lives of Black Women in America, will present “Double Jeopardy: The Impact of Racial and Gender Bias on African American Women” on Friday, May 20, at 3 p.m., in the Discovery Room, E163 Student Union on the Wright State University campus. The event is free and open to the public. (05/11/2005) Wright State president Kim Goldenberg chairs upcoming Dayton Urban League 58th annual dinner -- Kim Goldenberg, president of Wright State University, is the honorary chair for the 58th Annual Dayton Urban League dinner scheduled for Tuesday, May 10, at the Dayton Convention Center.(05/05/2005) Miami Valley middle school students to compete in state history project finals -- The upcoming statewide National History Day competition will include 10 projects from Miami Valley middle school students, ranging from the Titanic and Alexander Graham Bell to the Underground Railroad and the Salem witch trials. A Teaching American History grant awarded to Wright State University’s History Department, the Montgomery County Educational Service Center and ThinkTV is supporting the competition that is presented with assistance from the U.S. Department of Education.(05/03/2005) Diversity workshop for human resource professionals scheduled at Wright State University -- Approximately 230 human resource professionals from throughout the Miami Valley are expected to attend a “Best Practices in Diversity Forum” scheduled at Wright State University on Tuesday, May 24.(05/03/2005) Good Evening: Wright State professor discusses facination with Alfred Hitchcock -- Charles Derry, award-winning professor of theatre arts and coordinator of WSU’s Motion Pictures Program, has had a long fascination with Alfred Hitchcock and the thriller film genre. He authored The Suspense Thriller: Films in the Shadow of Alfred Hitchcock as well as Dark Dreams: A Psychological History of the Modern Horror Film, soon to appear in a revised edition.
