Students cut grass with robotic-controlled mower -- Cutting the lawn has taken on significant importance for a group of Wright State University students. The 11-member team is entered in the Fourth Annual Institute of Navigation (ION) Autonomous Lawnmower Competition hosted at Wright State this Saturday (June 2). (05/31/2007)

Wright State University students excel in Yellow Pages advertising competition -- How do you design a Yellow Pages ad that stands out from the crowd and communicates the necessary information to attract customers to your business? That was the challenge for nearly 1,800 students from over 200 colleges and universities nationwide that entered the 2006–2007 Yellow Pages Association Creative Competition. WSU business college, Dayton Early College Academy partner for Young Business Scholars Program -- Ask business executives the secret to their success, and, in many cases, they will say it was the influence of a mentor in their formative years. For Webster describes a mentor as “a wise or trusted counselor or teacher.” Berkwood Farmer, Ph.D., dean of the Raj Soin College of Business at Wright State University, will assume this vital role in the fall for 15 students at the Dayton Early College Academy. Rapper-turned-psychologist Roxanne Shanté to speak at Wright State University -- Roxanne Shanté, who recorded a hit record at age 14, retired from the music business at age 25, and is now a psychologist, will discuss “The Relevance of Hip-Hop to Social Change” when she visits Wright State University on Friday, May 18. As part of Wright State’s 40th anniversary celebration, Shanté will speak at 12:15 p.m. in the Pathfinder Lounge, room E110 in the Student Union on the Wright State campus. Sponsored by the Bolinga Black Cultural Resources Center and African American Women in Professional Psychology, the event is free and open to the public.(05/15/2007)

Wright State SOPP students staff memory clinic to aid underserved who suffer from dementia -- Alzheimer’s disease adversely affects the African American community in two critical areas. Research shows that a higher percentage of African Americans suffer from this form of dementia than the general population. And, to complicate things, many African Americans in the lower income brackets feel limited in their access to regular health care. The Wright State University School of Professional Psychology Community Memory Clinic at the Duke Ellis Human Development Institute in West Dayton was established in part to address these concerns. Wright State student starts support group to help those with post-traumatic stress disorder -- Nancy Scott thought her life was over. Her ex-boyfriend had viciously beaten her, forced her into a car and taken her to a deserted corn field in rural Montgomery County. “I was sure he was going to kill me,” said the Wright State University student in recalling the frightening incident from 2003. Personality more important than job satisfaction in determining job performance success, WSU psychologist says -- Job satisfaction has traditionally been thought of by most business managers to be key in determining job performance. The prevailing thought is if you are satisfied and happy in your work, you will perform better than someone who isn’t happy at work.Not so, according to a research project by Nathan Bowling, Ph.D., an assistant professor of psychology at Wright State. His findings, which will be published soon in the Journal of Vocational Behavior, show that although satisfaction and performance are related to each other, satisfaction does not cause performance.
