Successful STEM program for more than 20 years trains minorities to become engineers, scientists -- Some 20 years ago Wright State collaborated with Dayton Public Schools, local industry and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base to develop what has turned out to be an immensely successful program to interest middle school and high school students in science and engineering career fields. The Wright State University Science, Technology and Engineering Preparatory Program, named Wright STEPP, was created to enhance the development and education of underrepresented and minority youth in the fields of engineering, math and science. (06/29/2007) Pregnancy discrimination topic for WSU meeting of Ohio Civil Rights Commission -- Proposed changes to state regulations on pregnancy discrimination will be discussed at a special meeting of the Ohio Civil Rights Commission to be held at Wright State University. The public is invited to the 6 p.m. session on Thursday, June 21, in the Student Union Endeavour Room.(06/19/2007) Wright State environmental scientist receives $900,000 grant to help clean up polluted American harbors -- Most of the harbors in America are in trouble. The culprit is pollution. These seaports have been described as the largest and most poorly regulated sources of urban pollution in the country. One of the primary obstacles to correcting this problem is a lack of accurate and cost- effective ways to measure the pollution that is present to determine if clean-up is needed. Allen Burton, an expert on the pollution of aquatic systems, has received an innovative $900,000 grant to help develop a solution for this environmental dilemma.
(06/19/2007) Wright State names Jan Hillman associate vice president for development -- Wright State University has appointed Jan Hillman associate vice president for development. Hillman previously served as executive director of the Marquette General Foundation in Marquette, Mich., where she established the foundation’s first-ever comprehensive campaign. (06/18/2007) Wright State takes lead in helping teens prepare for personal finance graduation requirements -- Wright State University is taking the lead to educate Ohio youth on personal finance issues as an important deadline approaches for teenagers: Personal finance education will be required for all Ohio high school students, starting in 2010. Students who can’t master basic personal finance concepts will risk not graduating from high school.(06/18/2007) Student success in stock market simulation at Wright State -- While most people would be happy with a 10 to 12 percent return on their stocks, a group of 12-to 14-year-olds was able to approach 20 percent in the Ohio Stock Market Simulation, which concluded recently through the Center for Economic Education (CEE) at Wright State University. (06/12/2007) Wright State and the University of Toledo unveil online nursing doctoral program -- The Wright State University Board of Trustees today approved a new doctoral program, the Doctor of Nursing Practice (D.N.P.), to be offered by the university’s College of Nursing and Health. The program, jointly offered with the University of Toledo (UT), will be the first practice-oriented nursing doctoral program offered by an Ohio public university. The D.N.P. will be officially launched once reviewed and approved by the Ohio Board of Regents.(06/8/2007) Wright State to celebrate 40th anniversary commencement on Saturday, June 9 -- It’s been 40 years since students, faculty and staff at the new Wright State University planted a tree to commemorate the university’s founding. Forty years and 80,000 alumni later, the university will celebrate the class of 2007 and 40 years of making a difference in people’s lives during the 40th semiannual commencement ceremony on Saturday, June 9, at 10 a.m. in the Ervin J. Nutter Center on campus. (06/7/2007) Robot joins Nursing Institute of West Central Ohio to address faculty shortage -- The Nursing Institute of West Central Ohio today unveiled a new addition to the regional nursing education community—a robot. Developed by InTouch Health® from Santa Barbara, California, the Remote Presence Robotic System (RP-7™) will allow nursing faculty members to interact with students from remote locations. The Nursing Institute, headquartered at Wright State, will be the first location in Ohio to have access to this robotic technology and be the first nurse education center in the nation to use the RP-7 for educational purposes.
