Graduate Teaching Assistantships
A graduate teaching assistantship (GTA) is awarded to a graduate student in the Department of Music (DoM); financial support is given to the student in return for academic program support under the supervision of a faculty member. GTAs may assist faculty in teaching undergraduate courses, including ensembles, or in providing other appropriate academic assistance such as grading examinations or other papers, monitoring recital attendance and concert support, and general maintenance of departmental equipment and/or facilities.
How to apply for a GTA
Students should first apply to the program for admittance. Then submit a DoM GTA application (download from the DoM grad website or obtained from the DoM office), and submit to the DoM before April 15. GTA applicants should also submit three letters of professional recommendation.
What a GTA covers
Tuition and a stipend (currently about $7,500+ per year). Students must enroll for a minimum of 8 grad hours in music per regular quarter (FWS). Following the first year, students may opt for summer tuition, too. Health care may be obtained from WSU at additional cost to the student. Other related fees, such as applied lesson fees and parking are not covered.
Length of time a GTA lasts
GTA’s are one-year, renewable for up to a second year. For the stipend, the are expected to work for the DoM about 20 hours per week, average. Other employment may be approved, but the DoM duties must come first.
