About Our Panel

With nearly thirty years experience in healthcare management,
Joan Swenson’s responsibilities began in nursing management, and as a nurse recruiter. Ms. Swenson joined Kettering Medical Center in 1998 as the Director of Human Resources, and in 2003 she became the Chief Human Resources Officer for the Kettering Health Network. She serves on several boards, and is a member of the Miami Valley Senior HR Executives, the American Society for Healthcare Human Resources Administration, and the Society of Human Resource Management. Ms. Swenson holds a B.S. in Nursing from Atlantic Union College and an MBA from Regis University.

Michael T. Edicola is Vice President, Human Resources, for NewPage Corporation. With extensive experience across all human resource disciplines, Mr. Edicola previously was HR vice president for Baxter International Corporation, a $10 billion global medical products company, where he was responsible for leading global human resources across three business groups, with 31,000 employees in 65 locations worldwide. Mr Edicola has also held senior human resource leadership positions at General Electric, the Rank Group PLC, and Zebra Technologies Corporation. He holds undergraduate and advanced degrees in Industrial Relations and Human Resource management from Le Moyne College and from the University of Cincinnati.

Mr. Zant Chapelo spent 20 years in the military and eight years in the private sector in a variety of organizational development, training and sales management roles. He was on the faculty of the Air Force’s Air University Leadership Academy, as well as HR director of Mission Readiness at the Air Force Institute of Technology. He entered the corporate sector in 2000 as manager of sales training and education at LexisNexis and later served as sales manager for a five-state region. Before joining WorkflowOne in November 2006, he was a sales performance consultant with NCR Corporation’s Global Learning Group.

About Our Topic:

With so much of what everyone thought we knew turned upside down, what are the ways in which HR can help organizations survive and prosper? The challenges are many: How to help the firm preserve cash, while still maintaining  attractive and equitable benefit programs? How to shape the work force to survive today, and be ready for a better tomorrow? How to communicate honestly and supportively to an anxious workforce? How to ensure that all are treated with dignity and fairness, even in these times of fiscal constraints?

In a recent article, Jack and Suzy Welch wrote that these times are HR's "moment of  truth."  It is to help you meet these demands that this panel discussion --"Confronting the Challenges: HR in Difficult Times"--was created.
