The first year of college is an exciting time: You want to do your best and make wise choices in every area. Many students enter college believing that they must choose a major that will guarantee employment after graduation and be their life long job until retirement. But not all students enter college knowing what major they want. Many students begin their education at Wright State and decide on what major is best for them over the couple years of their course work.
If you do not know what major to choose, you are not alone. At least thirty percent of Wright State first year student "decide" on a major during the first two years, and many who have declared a major will change their major several times before they make a final decision. Being a "deciding" student places you in the position to explore, investigate, and expand your general knowledge as you plan for your future. This is the opportune time for you to brainstorm and dream of all the possibilities that are available to you. This is also the time to discover who you are and what you want to be and do in the future.
While choosing a major, you may hear your parents and other students say, "You'll never get a job with that major." You must remember that a college education is not job training, but it is an opportunity to become a well-rounded individual with a repertoire of skills and knowledge that can take you in a number of different directions. It is important for you to understand that a good career decision is based on knowing a lot about oneself and about the world of work. You may feel overwhelmed, but there are resources on campus that will help you find the "wright" major here at Wright State University. Your Academic Advisor will be the most important resources in discussing what majors you can explore at Wright State.
