Certificate in Comparative Development
The Certificate in Comparative Development is a program in which advanced undergraduates from both continents can jointly
participate. This innovative certificate program is based upon focused and complementary instruction in the fields of business, communications and public administration as well as individualized learning experiences within public and private sectors. It incorporates
opportunities for participating students to study and learn from the experience of regional development initiatives on both sides of the Atlantic. It provides for students the acquisition of a second language capabilities as well as an enhanced understanding of the
societies and cultures of Europe and the United States. it features joint US/EU faculty cooperation in the development and delivery of common curricular and internship modules including web-based instruction. The overall objective of the program is to provide the next
generation of the problem-solvers with both effective interdisciplinary training and useful comparative and international insights and perspectives.
Program Requirements:
for American students:
To qualify a student must have:
a concentration or major study area in business, communication, or public administration/political science
junior year standing
a minimum 2 years of university level foreign language study
a strong academic record
Before study abroad participants need to enroll in:
an intensive foreign language program
a course on the contemporary Europe (4 credit hours)
relevant course work in business, communication, or public administration/political science
During the course of study abroad students shall:
take courses in business, communication, public administration/political science, regional or urban development (total of 12 credit hours)
complete a practical training experience (internship - 4 credit hours)
participate in an intensive on-site foreign language instruction (non-credit)
maintain a reflective journal (non-credit)
Students returning shall:
complete a web-based course on leadership in regional planning and development (1 credit hour)
participate in a re-integration seminar
help recruit new students to the program

for European students:

third year standing
proficiency in English
a strong academic record
Before study abroad participants need to enroll in:
a course on the contemporary United States (3 credit hours)
relevant course work in business, communication, or political science/public administration
During the course of study abroad students shall:
take courses in business, communication, political science/public administration, regional or urban development (total of 9 credit hours)
complete a practical training experience (internship - 3 credit hours)
participate in an intensive on-site foreign language instruction (non-credit)
maintain a reflective journal (non-credit)
Students returning shall:
complete a web-based course on leadership in regional planning and development (1 credit hour)
participate in a re-integration seminar
help recruit new students to the program
