Drawing From Perception VI and Ruth Miller: Paintings and Works on Paper

DRAWING FROM PERCEPTION VI
March 31-May 3, 2009
Drawing From Perception Returns to Wright State
Works by more than 60 artists from across the country will grace the walls of the Robert & Elaine Stein Galleries at Wright State University from March 31 through May 3 for Drawing from Perception VI. Begun in 1996, Drawing from Perception is a juried show focused on the discipline of drawing from observation using traditional materials.
Renowned New York painter Ruth Miller served as this year’s juror.
Drawing from Perception VI captures the variety of subjects and techniques available to contemporary artists who continue to use traditional materials. Miller’s selections perfectly illustrate just how varied the discipline of drawing can be. Selected works range from small-scale watercolors to large charcoal drawings, encompassing subjects from the artist’s model to landscapes and cityscapes. Where some artists work in a very controlled manner, observing minute details about their subject and surroundings, others work in a more gestural manner, creating an impression of their environment.
Showing concurrently at the galleries will be Miller's own work. The exhibition, Ruth Miller: Paintings and Works on Paper, is an intimate look at the juror’s own observational works. Miller’s career spans more than 50 years, beginning with her study at the Art Students League in New York and leading to an illustrious international career as a teacher and painter. She lives and continues to work in Connecticut.
Miller will give a public lecture on May 3 at 2:30 p.m. in room M252 in the Creative Arts Center, the building housing the Robert & Elaine Stein Galleries. A closing reception will be held immediately following the lecture from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. in the Robert & Elaine Stein Galleries, A132 Creative Arts Center.
Both exhibitions were organized by Glen Cebulash and Diane Fitch, professors of art and art history at Wright State. This exhibition is supported by the Friends of the Galleries, the Wright State University College of Liberal Arts and the Ohio Arts Council.
Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, 10:00 a.m.—4:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday noon to 5:00 p.m. All visitor parking lots are free; parking at the Creative Arts Center is unrestricted on the weekends and a reserved parking space for galleries patrons is available during school hours. All events at the galleries are free and open to the public.
