Event Details:

There are many reasons to earn a master’s degree in Instructional Design and Learning Technologies (IDL). Do you want to learn how to use learning technologies to design your courses (in-person or virtual) more effectively? Do you want to learn how to develop online classes? Or would you like a career change to a new, innovative, enjoyable job in Instructional Design (ID)? IDs work on a collaborative team using digital technologies to develop educational and/or training materials. This job is great for creative individuals who enjoy working with people,  learning new educational technologies, and working in fast-paced, stimulating work environments. The Wright State University M.Ed. in Instructional Design and Learning Technologies (IDL) is an entirely online master’s degree that requires ten classes to complete. Graduates from this program gain the skills to help do the following:

  1. Become a More Effective Instructor:
Instructors in the K12 or Higher Education field can gain experience designing classes that enhance their students’ learning, implementing learning technologies in the class (in-person and virtual), developing content, and/or developing effective online classes.
  2. Instructional Designer:
You can switch careers and become an instructional designer in many different areas (e.g., corporate, higher education, K-12 education, military, nonprofit, and more), working on a team to develop training and educational courses.
  3. Talent Development:
This degree will help you learn how to design training programs to help develop the talent and skills of employees.
  4. Training:
Graduates of this program become trainers who provide professional development workshops.
  5. Just-in-Time  (JIT) Training Material:
Learn how to develop JIT training materials to help internal and external customers use products and complete forms. JIT Training Material is valuable for all disciplines.

How to Apply:
Here are several ways to apply to the M.Ed. IDL degree:

  • Apply for a Graduate Degree: If you already have your undergraduate degree or are about to graduate, you can start your M.Ed. IDL program, then complete ten classes to earn their master’s degree. Apply through the Wright State Graduate School. Cohorts can begin in the Fall A or Spring A term.
  • Apply for a Second Graduate Degree: If you already have a master’s or doctorate, students can earn an M.Ed. IDL with only eight classes. Apply through the Wright State Graduate School. Cohorts can begin in the Fall A or Spring A term. Many people with a doctorate (or working on a doctorate) complete this degree to gain expertise in teaching, pedagogies, learning technologies, instructional design, and online class development.
  • Apply for Senior Permission: High-achieving undergraduate students (Policy 5330.2) close to their senior year may apply to take IDL graduate courses during their senior year. These undergraduate students may apply (Graduate Course Permission Form) to take up to four IDL graduate classes (IDL-7110 Fall A, IDL-7120 Fall B, IDL-7130-Spring A, and IDL-7140 Spring B) prior to graduation. These classes do not replace undergraduate classes but give students a head start on earning their graduate degree.

Tuition Remission:
Wright State faculty (full-time and part-time) and staff may use your tuition remission to take IDL classes. Please review the tuition remission policy to review the benefits:
