[OFFICIAL-L] Changes to the University Calendar

Dear Wright State Community,

I am pleased to announce two changes to the university calendar, effective August 2025.

Beginning with academic year 2025–2026, Wright State students will enjoy a two-day fall break annually just before midterm. The 2025 fall break will be Thursday and Friday, October 9 and 10, 2025.

Fall break will provide a short and necessary breather midway through the semester, allowing students and faculty to catch up and prepare for their midterms. Fall break is not a vacation period for university employees. Faculty and advisors will be available during their regular office hours during fall break, but no classes will be held.

The idea of a fall break was first suggested by the university’s Mental Health Task Force as a benefit to students and faculty. Then in 2023, the Faculty Senate passed a resolution recommending the university implement a fall break. We are pleased that every academic unit has worked hard to help make fall break a reality.

The second change to the university calendar involves scheduling summer semester two weeks after the end of spring semester, rather than one week after, beginning with summer semester 2026, which will begin on Monday, May 18. Changing the start of summer semester helps bring Wright State’s summer course schedule into closer alignment with neighboring universities and high schools, opening our summer courses to more students and potentially increasing enrollment.

I want to commend AAUP-WSU for negotiating this change to the university’s summer calendar with us.

The current academic year, 2024–2025, is unchanged, but we are confident that these changes, which will be implemented in academic year 2025–2026, will enhance student learning, student and faculty mental health, and summer enrollment.

Best,

Amy Thompson, Ph.D.
Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs
