Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) Response: Academics and Course Delivery

Academic Life

Classroom capacity has returned to 100 percent. Many synchronous (real-time) online courses have reverted to in-person offerings, while asynchronous (on-demand) online classes will continue as planned to maintain maximum flexibility and convenience for students. Offerings will vary by course and by faculty members, so please pay careful attention to course syllabi.

We are counting on everyone to make responsible social choices. We are all in this together.

Here’s how you can be safe on campus:

  • Get vaccinated.
  • Get the booster shot(s), when eligible.
  • Wear a face mask:
    • where doing so is required.
    • if recommended by your health care provider or the CDC.
  • Conduct a daily self-assessment; stay home if sick.
  • Wash hands regularly and use hand sanitizer when soap and water are not nearby.
  • Follow all posted guidelines.
  • Keep COVID tests on hand in case you ever need one.
  • If you test positive for COVID, submit a self-report form as soon as possible to expedite contact tracing efforts.
  • Use software like Cisco Webex, Zoom, or Microsoft Teams to meet and collaborate virtually for group projects.

If you test positive for COVID-19, you must self-isolate and/or quarantine as recommended by the CDC. Contact your instructors and/or supervisor to let them know your expected date of return. Please also submit a self-report form as soon as possible. This allows the university to conduct contact tracing to help protect your friends, roommates, colleagues, and classmates.


Methods of Course Delivery

Courses are being delivered in one of three ways: face-to-face, flexible, or remote. Course delivery information is available on WINGS Express, although there is a possibility the delivery option for some courses could change.

1. Face-to-face delivery: A course that is offered with direct faculty-student interaction occurring primarily in-person, may include some online instruction (not to exceed 20 percent). There is no remote option. The learning objectives of these courses cannot be imparted remotely; for example, clinicals, practica, and labs involving use of equipment.

2. Flexible delivery: This delivery approach combines in-person delivery with a remote option. Faculty must provide a remote option for students to select. Faculty have choices in how to deliver this remote option (live broadcast, recording, or some other delivery of course material).

  • A remote option allows for students unable to attend the in-person components of a course to participate in the course. Students are not required to submit documentation or rationale for participating in the course remotely.
  • There are a variety of instructional ways faculty may decide to teach using this delivery.
  • Examples may include, but not limited to: online lectures with in-person discussions/hands-on activities, in-person lectures/hands-on activities with remote options, and adopting “flips”, in-person participation is staggered to allow for physical distancing whenever possible (such as, half the class might meet in person early in the week and the other half later in the week).

3. Remote delivery: An online course where 100% of the direct faculty-led instruction is delivered in a synchronous (real-time) or asynchronous (on-demand) instruction mode. Students do not need to be on campus for any portion of the course work, homework/independent student preparatory work or evaluation. Instruction and interaction occur through the internet, such as via the university-managed Learning Management System (LMS). Students who have issues connecting in remotely will have the opportunity to schedule time on campus, in the computer labs or other designated spaces.

What is the difference between Asynchronous and Synchronous Remote Delivery?

Asynchronous: Fully online with no set meet time; on-demand online learning
Students do not meet on specific days and times, which allows for a great deal of flexibility.

  • Students can work at their own pace, as long as they meet scheduled due dates.
  • Faculty can still engage in robust interactions with their students throughout the course.
  • Students and faculty primarily communicate via written or digital communication such as Slack, Facebook Groups, Google phone, etc.
  • Examples include: Self-paced modules or time-released modules in Pilot. Faculty can record video lectures or video reactions/responses, and conduct class activities such as annotated Perusall readings, podcasts, active learning, and laboratory assignments. Students can also participate in asynchronous video postings such as Flipgrid and Adobe Spark.

Synchronous: Fully online using a set meet time; real-time online learnign
Students meet online during published scheduled days and times. Students in remote classes will have a high-level, real-time interaction with their faculty instructor and fellow students during the scheduled times.

  • Live, web-based communication
  • Students and faculty talk in real-time
  • Example: Use real-time video conferencing tool (Blackboard Collaborate Ultra) that lets you add files, share applications, and use a virtual whiteboard to interact with students.

Wright State will continue to monitor the pandemic in partnership with Greene and Mercer County Public Health Departments and will comply with state safety restrictions and mandates as they evolve.


How to Find Course Delivery Information

Course delivery attributes have been updated in WINGS Express. To view this information for a course you're already registered for, please view your Active Registration information in WINGS Express and click on a Course Title to bring up information about the specific class. Under Attributes, you will find your course delivery details.

  1. Log into WINGS
  2. Click the WINGS Express icon in the upper-right corner
  3. Click on Student and Financial Aid
  4. Click on Registration & Records
  5. Select Active Registration
  6. Click on the Course Title hyperlink to find their attribute

How to Search Classes by Course Delivery Attribute

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Log into WINGS
  2. Click the WINGS Express icon in the upper-right corner
  3. Click on Student and Financial Aid
  4. Click on Look Up Classes
  5. Select at least on Subject, Campus, and Part of Term (select ALL subjects to see all matching options)
  6. Select the Attribute Type for the mode of course delivery (Face-to-Face, Flexible Delivery, Fully Online)
  7. Click the Class Search button; additional details are available from the HELP link
  8. The returning course list will display the selected Attribute Type; for more details, click the course title link

In the Classroom

Classrooms are deep cleaned at least once per day by the cleaning staff. Cleaning solution, paper towels, and hand sanitizer are available in the classrooms. Please call 937-775-4444 or email facilities@wright.edu if additional supplies are needed.

Department offices or other support areas may request supplies of surgical or KN95 masks by contacting Facilities at 937-775-4444 or EHS at wright.edu/ehs-service. EHS will also assist employees for the use of N95 respirators. Please make a service request at wright.edu/ehs-service.
