El Jefe Updates: Bill Holmes

Dear students,

It is hard for me to believe that the first semester at WSU is over and we are coming upon the holiday break! Allow me just a moment to thank all of you for support, encouragement and the opportunity to get to know you a little better.
Much of this semester felt like I was trying to catch a drink from a fire hose. But it has gone quickly and successfully. I have been especially pleased to see the strong relationships between you all and the UCIE staff. The competence and caring shown by the UCIE staff in working with you to be academically successful as well as finding a second home here at WSU, is heartening.
I hope you have a fabulous, and safe, holiday season whether you decide to enjoy the surrounding area, travel across the US, or return home to your families. On behalf of myself and the entire UCIE, we wish you a pleasure-filled and memorable vacation.

See you next year!

Bill

Highlighting Collaborations: International Education Week

The University Center for International Education collaborated with a variety of community groups, campus offices, and student organizations during the month of November to celebrate International Education Week. November 13-17th marked the 18th anniversary of International Education Week (IEW), an annual celebration of international education and exchange worldwide. Institutions across the United States and around the world hosted events throughout the week to recognize international students, education abroad, and internationalization. On our campus, students, faculty, and staff had the opportunity to enjoy regional celebrations from Latin America, Africa, Middle East, and Asia, an Italian Pasta Making Class, an International Photo Gallery, and even sessions designed for career development. We thank all our campus partners who contributed to a successful International Education Week. Some other collaborations for the month of November were:

Amazing Study Abroad Graduate: Tasha Fox

Before coming to Wright State, Tasha was a Rotary Youth Exchange student in Belgium where she lived with a host family and learned French. She then pursued an undergraduate degree in French at Wright State where she had the opportunity to study abroad again. She spent 3 weeks in Tanzania with the School of Nursing’s ambassador program, a semester in Dalian, China on scholarship teaching English, and then a year in Angers, France on WSU’s exchange program. After completing her BA, she began her MBA in international business, also at Wright State. Tasha was a graduate assistant at the Raj Soin College of Business during the first two semesters of her Master’s degree and then spent her last semester studying abroad in Salamanca, Spain where she learned Spanish and took her final business course online. After graduation, Tasha plans to spend some time au pairing in Madrid to perfect her Spanish before moving to China to work and learn Mandarin. Tasha says this is not the end of her educational career. She hopes to eventually pursue another Master’s in Conflict Resolution at Tel Aviv University and would eventually like to pursue a PhD. For the time being, she is focusing on her career and hopes to work abroad for an NGO where she can utilize her languages, business knowledge, and cultural competence to make the world a better place. Congrats Tasha! We are so proud of you.
