Although he’ll be 69 in four days, had a pacemaker installed a while back and has added a few pounds since he was the speedy Wright State player who ended up in the Raiders’ record book and on the school’s athletic Wall of Fame, Abdul Shakur Ahmad said, without irony or exaggeration:
“I’m still a point guard.”
But now, instead of feeding the ball to guys like Bob Grote, Lyle Falknor and Jim Minch, he’s distributing information and inspiration to people back in his hometown of Middletown
Ahmad, who was known as Ricky Martin back in his Wright State days in the 1970s, is helping coordinate the Black History Month celebration this year at the Pendleton Art Center in downtown Middletown.
The events kick off tonight at 5:30 with an educational program that includes a keynote address by the Pastor Kendall Wright, a Middletown High School and University of Dayton graduate, who is president of Entelechy Training and Development and will speak on the importance of Black History Month, Ahmad said.
