Wright State knew what it needed to have happen when it was sitting in second place two weeks ago — win the rest of its games and hope for a little help.
As it turns out, the Raiders received a supersized scooping of help down the stretch, allowing them to catch Cleveland State and claim a share of the Horizon League title — despite losing one game themselves.
They dropped their opener at Northern Kentucky on Friday, but the preseason league favorites recovered for a 77-71 victory Saturday, ending the regular season at 18-5 overall and 16-4 in the conference for their third straight crown.
The Vikings lost two of their last four games, splitting with Detroit and going 1-1 at Purdue Fort Wayne this weekend. They overcame an eight-point halftime deficit Saturday for a 67-55 win behind Trotwood-Madison product Torrey Patton’s 16 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.
Both teams will have a home game in the tourney quarterfinals March 2. The seeding was to be decided Saturday night, but their opponents won’t be known until after Thursday’s first-round games.
“It was probably the best win we’ve had all year. The other 17 have kind of been — I don’t want to say easy — but we didn’t have to fight like this for them. It’s gratifying to be able to say we’re conference champs again,” coach Scott Nagy said.
