If Wright State players had been slow to rev up the engines against Purdue Fort Wayne on Sunday afternoon, it wouldn’t be hard to understand.
The obstacles facing them had even coach Scott Nagy experiencing more angst than usual.
The tipoff was just under 37 hours after a disheartening loss to Cleveland State. A noon game is always a challenge for late-rising college students. And many fans seemed to have gotten an early start on their Bengal watch parties since only 2,877 showed up, about half of the turnout for CSU.
But the Raiders jumped out to leads of 18-10, 23-13 and 29-15. And even after a slight wobble late in the first half, they never relinquished control on their way to a 75-63 victory.
“I was worried about this game, whether we won or lost against Cleveland State, about getting our guys turned around,” Nagy said. “I can’t tell you how proud I am of their effort.
“A Sunday start at noon and a lot of things going on. For our guys to play emotionally the way they did, I was just so pleased with them. Defensively, we were very good. I thought our kids guarded well.”
