Wright State was picked third in the Horizon League preseason poll Wednesday in a vote of 40 coaches, sports information directors and media, while Purdue Fort Wayne was favored slightly over Northern Kentucky to win the crown.
And while it’s an educated guess with so many transfers shuffling in and out, Raiders coach Scott Nagy was incredulous over his team getting so much respect from prognosticators.
“I’m trying to figure out what they’re looking at,” he said. “That’s way higher than I would have thought. We lost two guys who averaged about 40 points for us.
“But it all shakes out differently anyway. It did last year.”
The Raiders lost two players to major-conference schools in Tanner Holden (20.1 average) and Grant Basile (18.5), but, after being picked second in the preseason poll last year, they won the conference tourney and an NCAA game.
Plus, they didn’t just stand pat after those departures. Among the newcomers is senior guard Amari Davis, a former HL freshman of the year. He joined teammate Trey Calvin on the preseason all-league second team.
