Jack S. Gruber, M.D., 76, of Sylva, NC, passed away Jan. 5, 2021, after complications developed from COVID-19.
He was born in Marion, Ohio, on July 23, 1944, to the late Vernon and Adeline (Cluff) Gruber. He graduated in one of the last classes of Claridon High School in Marion.
Jack went on to attend Otterbein College for his undergraduate studies and then medical school at Ohio State University. After completing his obstetrics and gynecology residency in Dayton in 1974, Dr. Gruber completed a fellowship in gynecological endocrinology and infertility at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. He returned to Dayton to practice medicine at Miami Valley Hospital and became a faculty member of the department of OB/GYN at Wright State University in 1976. He served as vice chairman of the department in his final years at Wright State and retired as a professor emeritus in 2006. Dr. Gruber has a scholarship in his name at Wright State University for fourth year medical students named the Jack Gruber Endowed Scholarship in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Dr. Gruber retired from medicine and moved to 35 beautiful acres in Sylva, NC. He gained so many new friends there. He loved farming, fishing, antiquing, cooking, woodworking, beekeeping, hosting dinner parties, and dancing with his friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Adeline (Cluff) Gruber; sister, Charlotte Trader; brother, Leroy Gruber; and longtime partner, Charlene Luciani.
He will be missed and is survived by his brother, Charles (Pam) Gruber; sister, Beth (Bill) Helfferich; children, Stephanie Magdowski, Jenny (Aaron) Rajda, Stephanie Campbell, and John Gruber; grandchildren, Nathan Magdowski, Levi Rajda, Ella Rajda, Abigail Gruber, Jacob Gruber, Alison Gruber, Austin Hahn, and Timothy Hahn; his loving partner, Levon Hahn; and countless friends and other family members.
A grave-side service is scheduled at Marion Cemetery on May 22, 2021, at 10 a.m.
