The Boonshoft School of Medicine recently received a large estate gift that will be put toward scholarships.
The late William Bernie, M.D., has left $1.7 million through an estate gift to Wright State University’s Boonshoft School of Medicine. The money will be used to support scholarships for medical students.
Originating from Dayton and graduating from Miami University and the University of Cincinnati, Bernie was a lifelong leader in surgery and medical research. He was a founding member of Wright State’s Department of Surgery, and worked as a volunteer faculty member for over three decades.
Bernie donated generously to the Boonshoft School of Medicine throughout his life and in 1993, established the Helen K. and David Bernie Scholarship Fund in honor of his parents. The scholarship awards high-achieving medical students following their first year of studies.
WSU President Sue Edwards says the $1.7 million estate gift will go toward funding the scholarship for years to come.
“While Dr. Bernie may not be here to see the impact he makes in the lives of our students, they will proudly carry on his long legacy of excellence in medical care and surgical innovation,” said Edwards. “Dr. Bernie’s generosity will allow us to continue graduating highly trained professionals who will serve patients throughout our region, state and nation.”
