Join other Wright State retirees on a tour of the newly restored Pearl’s Fen with Dr. James Amon, emeritus biological sciences professor, on Wednesday, June 8, at 10 a.m.
Located at the northern edge of the Beaver Creek Wetlands corridor, Pearl’s Fen is where Beaver Creek begins. Pearl’s Fen is a peat wetland containing a rich diversity of plant and animal life that is maintained by springs that emerge from nearby glacial deposits. Visitors can view the diverse wetland area from a boardwalk and access nearby Oakes Quarry via a connector trail.
Learn about the importance and rarity of this fen while enjoying its beautiful late spring blooms. Learn why and how the Beaver Creek Wetlands Association has helped to preserve and protect more than 2,300 acres of land along the Beaver Creek Wetlands corridor.
We will spend about one hour on the boardwalk. An optional 30- to 60-minute walk along the trails will follow. The boardwalk requires only street shoes but those who wish to continue on trails should have sturdy shoes for the irregular surface and potentially muddy sections. Pearl’s Fen is located at 4535 Byron Road in Fairborn. There is parking on site.
In the event of a light rain, the tour will continue. A rain date of Thursday, June 9, at 10 a.m., is scheduled in case of a storm. This event is free, but the tour is limited to 15 participants, so sign up soon.
