Training and Professional Development

Training Model

The training model at Counseling and Wellness Services (CWS) is based on a developmental perspective. We believe that professional development occurs in a sequential, cumulative, and graded manner over the course of the training year. Expectations and responsibilities increase throughout the year, commensurate with experience gained while at the counseling center. The staff of the center model the commitment to life-long learning, and we encourage trainees/interns to explore existing research, utilize literature and become active consumers of professional resources. Those who engage in training at CWS will gain experience with promoting college student mental health and participate in a broad range of clinical services, immersing themselves in the activities of a counseling center.

CWS uses a multicultural and social justice framework for its training program. We value and encourage trainee/intern self-exploration and "location of self" to open essential dialogues. We believe in the value of experiential learning and encourage all trainees/interns to engage the self in the process of developing multicultural competence. Social justice themes permeate all training and activities of the center. Staff model the use of self in training and clinical activities and believe in the power of authenticity in creating a welcoming environment and affirming identities for all who are connected to the center.

Trainees and interns are considered to be valuable members of the staff of CWS. Permanent staff and supervisors are committed to providing quality supervision and represent a diverse group of professionals with various theoretical approaches and clinical areas of interest and expertise. While individual supervisory styles vary, supervision at CWS tends to combine a focus on both personal and professional growth.
