Air Emissions
Wright State University operates several air emission sources that are regulated by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Clean Air Act. Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) works with those departments who operate these sources to ensure proper permitting, air emission controls, and recordkeeping requirements are met.
Visit the EPA website for more information on the air emission program.
Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures Plan
The EPA, through the Clean Water Act, establishes the Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) rules designed to prevent or contain the discharge of oil into waterways. The rules apply to facilities that store or use oil (as defined by the EPA) over certain threshold quantities that pose a threat to waterways in the event of a spill.
Wright State University exceeds the threshold quantities based on on-campus oil storage and use in underground and above-ground storage tanks, hydraulic elevators, transformers, emergency generators, and miscellaneous container storage. The rule requires covered facilities to develop and implement a written SPCC Plan that contains measures to prevent and control oil spills, including those resulting from human operational error or equipment failures.
EHS has developed the university’s SPCC plan and works with those departments that have activities that are covered under the plan.
Visit the EPA website for more information on the SPCC program.
Storm Water Management
Wright State University infrastructure is designed with a separate storm sewer system for the management of stormwater runoff from campus. This system collects runoff for discharge at various points on campus. The EPA considers this system a non-traditional municipal separate storm sewer system and as such Wright State is required to obtain a stormwater discharge permit.
The permit requires the university to develop and implement a stormwater management program designed to reduce the discharge of pollutants to the maximum extent practicable, to protect water quality, and to satisfy the requirements of the Clean Water Act.
EHS has obtained the required permit, developed the required stormwater management program, and works with those departments that have activities that can affect stormwater quality.

Underground Storage Tanks
Wright State University operates several underground storage tanks (UST) on campus for fueling vehicles.
EHS works with the departments that operate these tanks to reduce the risk of an accidental release of tank product and to comply with applicable UST rules and regulations. All tanks are regulated by the State Fire Marshal’s Bureau of Underground Storage Tanks Regulations (BUSTR).
