Agenda
The 2022-23 Faculty Senate first reviewed the proposed changes in February 2023 and then approved the changes during the March 27, 2023 Faculty Senate meeting. An open meeting of the University Faculty to review and discuss the proposed changes was held on April 3, 2023. The meeting was attended by Faculty President Brian Boyd, Faculty Vice President Megan Faragher, and 18 faculty members.
Dr. Boyd introduced the proposed update and expressed that the reason for this proposal is to update the Preamble of the Faculty Constitution to reflect the current University Mission Statement.
The majority of faculty sentiments in the meeting were against approval of the changes with multiple members expressing their belief that the previous mission statement is more adequate than the new one due to the lack of references to citizenship, service, and scholarly research. Other faculty expressed concern that they were not made aware of the update to the Mission Statement when the Faculty Senate reviewed and approved it during late Fall 2021 and early Spring 2022. Dr. Boyd expressed that the mission statement came out of the 2018 strategic planning sessions, and went through the normal cycle of New/Old business when it was reintroduced to the Faculty Senate.
Faculty will have the opportunity to vote to approve or reject the proposed changes from May 1 - May 3. Approval requires a minimum of 100 total votes to satisfy quorum requirements, and a two-thirds affirmative vote of those responding.
