Mental Health First Aid Training

As a follow-up to Wright State University’s safety notification review, university employees can register for Mental Health First Aid Training sponsored by Wright State University.

All employees must complete this training*

What is Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid is a certification that teaches individuals how to assist and support others who may be experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge. Mental Health First Aid is an evidence-based practice training offered virtually and in-person that uses community-specific scenarios, activities, and videos to teach the skills needed to recognize and respond to signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges as well as how to provide initial support until they are connected with appropriate professional help. This certification is valid for three years.

Prerequisites

Each employee that registers for one of the Mental Health First Aid trainings offered must complete the pre-work at least 24 business hours before the class date. If pre-work is not completed, the employee cannot attend the training. Information on how to complete the pre-work will be provided to you via email about 3 weeks before your class date.

After the training, you will complete an evaluation and receive your certification. Once trained, you will be certified in Mental Health First Aid for three years.

Length of the Training Session

Mental Health First Aid training is typically a 7-hour course but we are also offering a 6-hour version with less break times.

* All employees are required to complete mental health training. However, those employees who are unable to devote the time to the Mental Health First Aid training due to class schedules or other unavoidable situations will be eligible to substitute the faculty/staff module of the SOS for Higher Ed training.  This training uses video and interactive learning to teach students, faculty, and staff how to ACT (Acknowledge, Care, Tell) in their role in suicide prevention.  Through this training, you will learn how to recognize signs of suicide risk, how to have caring conversations that encourage someone to seek help, and how to build community connections that foster positive mental well-being.

To access that module:

  • Visit mindwise.digitalchalk.com and click "Create Account"
  • Enter name, Wright State University email address, and chosen password, click "Create"
  • Enter the redemption code wright and click "Next"
  • View the dashboard and select the SOS for Higher Ed training that fits your role

Counseling and Wellness will generate periodic reports to track your completion of this important initiative.
